How to Set Video Resolution on the PlayStation 3

The Sony PlayStation 3 supports video resolutions from 480p through 1080p, which ranges from standard definition, as you would find on most DVDs, through full high definition, which most PS3 game titles and Blu-Ray discs use. When you initially set up your PS3, choose the video resolutions the console puts out based on the type of cable you use to connect it and the video capabilities of your television set so you can optimize your viewing and gaming experiences.

Instructions

    • 1

Scroll through the sub-menus on the PS3 main menu until you find "Settings." Select the "Display Settings" option, then select "Video Output Settings."

    • 2

Choose the type of connecting cable you use to connect the PS3 to your TV. The PS3 displays pictures of each one, so match the picture to the cable you use. Press "X" when you are prompted to change the video output settings.

    • 3

Select the resolutions that your television set supports. If you are unsure of which resolutions it supports, consult your television's owner's manual. Highlight each resolution and press "X" to check the boxes next to them.

    • 4

Select the type of television you have from the two options, "16:9" or "4:3." If you are unsure of which to pick, consult your television's manual.

    • 5

Confirm that the settings you entered are correct. When you are satisfied with the changes you made, save them and exit the menu when the PS3 has finished applying all of the changes.
