How to Repair a Playstation 3 Laser

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) plays movies and games using a Blu-ray disc drive, which is functionally similar to DVD drives found in stand-alone DVD players. The laser of the Blu-ray disc drive focuses through a lens attached to the laser module; if the lens becomes dirty from dirt or grime getting into the console, the laser will not focus on the disc correctly and errors will result. You can repair the problem with the laser by cleaning the lens. A few tools will be needed to partially disassemble the PS3, as will some household items and supplies from a photographic store.

  • Flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver
  • No. 10 Torx screwdriver
  • Phillips jeweler's screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord from the PS3. Remove all the cables connected to the PS3's audio/video connectors. Remove the game controller and memory card from the slots on the front of the PS3. Place a bath towel on a work surface. Place the PS3 on the towel with the front-loading disc slot facing you.

    • 2

Insert the tip of a flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver beneath one of the rubber feet on the left edge of the PS3. Lift up on the tip to loosen the foot. Pull off the foot. Repeat this with the other rubber feet on the edge. Remove the screws from beneath the rubber feet with a Torx screwdriver.

    • 3

Slide the top shell to the left and pull it off. Remove the seven screws from the back side of the top of the case with the Torx screwdriver. Lift the back side of the PS3 up and toward you. Grip the sides of the PS3 and pull the top case off.

    • 4

Remove the screws from around the power supply with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver; the power supply is silver colored and at the back left side of the PS3. Lift the power supply and pull the two plugs in the circuit board beneath it out. Place the power supply aside.

    • 5

Remove the screws from around the Blu-ray disc drive with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. The drive is seated vertically at the front right side of the PS3. Lift the drive up and remove the two plugs from the circuit board beneath it. Place the drive face-down on the towel with the circuit board on the left and the warning sticker on the bottom right.

    • 6

Remove the three black screws from the slot in the lower right corner with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the metal plate off the drive with your fingers.

    • 7

Locate the laser module at the center of the now-exposed area of the drive. Aim a flashlight at the module so the beam of light is reflected off the lens; this provides you with the location of the lens. Remove the screws from around the lens with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

    • 8

Put on a white glove. Lift the lens off the laser assembly with the hand that is wearing the white glove. Blow the depression the lens came out of with a burst of compressed air. Place a piece of lens cleaning tissue on the towel. Place the lens on the towel. Blow the lens off with a burst of compressed air.

    • 9

Moisten the edge of a lens-cleaning tissue in lens cleaning solution. Wipe the lens with the edge of the tissue in a clockwise circular motion. Let the solution evaporate for at least a half hour before proceeding. Turn the lens over. Moisten the edge of another lens-cleaning tissue in lens-cleaning solution. Wipe the lens in the same manner as was done before. Let the solution evaporate for at least a half hour before proceeding.

    • 10

Wipe the lens with the edge of a dry lens-cleaning tissue in the same manner as was done before. Turn the lens over and repeat the cleaning with another dry edge.

    • 11

Place the lens back into the depression on the laser module. Reattach the screws. Place the metal plate back on the drive and reattach the screws. Turn the drive over and place it back on the PS3, after reattaching the plugs. Reattach the screws. Do the same for the power supply.

    • 12

Replace the top case and reattach the screws. Slide the top shell back on the PS3. Reattach the screws on the side. Apply a glue stick to the bottom of the rubber feet and stick them back on. Reattach the audio and video cables, the power cord and the memory card and controller.
