How to Download to a PS3 From a USB

Sony's PlayStation 3 is the third iteration of its PlayStation video game console. The PS3's firmware is constantly updated. This is done to keep the PS3 running at its peak performance and to add functionality like the video editor. These updates can be installed by direct download into the system or through a storage device like a USB drive.

      Open the USB drive in "Computer." Right-click inside the drive's folder and select "New," then "Folder." Name it "PS3."

      Create a new folder inside the "PS3" folder called "UPDATE." The folder must be in all uppercase letters for the PS3 to recognize it.

      Download the update from PlayStation's website. Name the download "PS3UPDAT.PUP" and insert it into the "UPDATE" folder. This must also be done in all uppercase letters for the PS3 to recognize it.

      Insert the USB drive into one of the PS3's USB ports. Press "X" on the PS3 controller to select "Settings." Click "X" on "System Update."

      Click "X" on "Update via Storage Media." Click "X" on "OK" to start the update.
