Instructions
Try playing other game discs and discs in other formats, such as CDs, Blu-ray movies, etc. This will help determine if the problem occurs across multiple platforms.
Delete game data for the title you are trying to play, and then reinstall it. Go to "Game Data Utility" on the PlayStation 3 menu and highlight the icon for the game. Choose the option to "Delete." Insert the disc into the drive and try to reinstall the game.
Confirm that your PlayStation 3 model is backward compatible if you are trying to run a PlayStation 2 disc in the console. Models CECHE01, CECHB01 and CECHA01 are compatible with older PlayStation games. Look on the back of the console to check the model number of your PlayStation 3.
Clean the disc if it appears to have debris or fingerprints on it. Use a soft, lint-free cloth. Sony recommends buying cloths specially made for cleaning CDs and DVDs, which are sold at stores that sell computer products. Wipe from the inside to the outside to minimize the chance of scratching.
Enter "Safe Mode" on the console and choose the option "Restore File System." This will eliminate damaged files saved on the hard drive that may adversely affect the operation of the disc drive.
