Blu-ray and HD
Playstation 3 consoles come standard with a built-in Blu-ray player. It can output resolution of up to 1080p (pixels) of HD when properly outfitted with HDMI cables and a compatible TV. In a review written by Melissa Perenson for "PC World," the PS3's Blu-ray player was compared to a stand-alone Blu-ray player made by Samsung and the PS3 was found to produce images that were "noticeably sharper and crisper, with more depth and detail." Many games designed for the PS3 maximize the system's HD graphics, resulting in clear, detailed images.
Online Multiplayer
The Playstation Network is an online multiplayer and multimedia outlet for the PS3. For no charge, players can interact and play with or against other Playstation 3 owners on-line. Registered users can maintain a player profile, add friends, send and receive messages and build and maintain a player avatar (an in-game representation of the player).
Large Game Library
Classic Playstation favorites from earlier consoles can be played on the PS3 if they're acquired through the Playstation store. "Crash Bandicoot," "Metal Gear Solid" and the first four "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" games are all members of the greatest hits collection. Gamers can also download and play free demo versions of any new games.
Internet Access
The built-in web browser works beyond the Playstation network just like any other browser. Netflix subscribers can also use the wireless connection to stream instant watch movies directly to a television.
Dynamic Motion Control
Sony's wireless motion control system, Playstation Move, is available on the PS3 through a remote control-shaped controller equipped with a LED bulb. Scott Lowe of IGN states the bulb, about the size of a ping-pong ball, is the driving force behind the motion controller, making it "the key to the Move's precision." The Playstation Move is available in some console bundles or sold in separate bundles for around $100.
