Tricks, Tips & Hacks for the PS3 System

The Sony PlayStation 3 is a gaming console with features such as Internet connectivity and Blu-ray compatibility. It continues to adapt to a changing technological environment. But while its top features are advertised, there are still a number of tips and tricks to make your PS3 easier to use and even more advanced.
  1. Checking the Joypad Battery

    • One of the only faults with the PlayStation joypad is that it has no battery display, and if you are in the middle of a game when it runs out it can be quite annoying. To check, simply hold down the button in the center of the controller. An indicator will appear on the screen as a small battery, revealing whether you need to recharge.

    Upgrading the Hard Drive

    • After a few months or years of using your console, a buildup of data will occur and more memory is needed. Changing the hard drive is a simple procedure. The largest hard drive (as of 2010) is 500 GB and costs about $230, but smaller sizes like 320 GB, 250 GB and 120 GB are available if you need less room.

If upgrading your hard drive to a 500 GB, purchase the Samsung M6. It is the only 500 GB hard drive that will fit into the PS3.

Use the PS3 like a PC

    • With Internet capabilities, the PS3 isn't only used to play against gamers around the world -- it can also browse the web. But with just a joypad to work with, typing online with the virtual keyboard can be quite frustrating.

Use the USB ports to plug in a separate keyboard and mouse, enabling you to type as easily as with a PC. If you are using Bluetooth, head to the "Settings" section, select "Accessory settings" and then "Bluetooth devices." A set of instructions will help you connect your keyboard and mouse.

    Turning DVDs into HD

    • The PS3 primary function is a gaming console, but ultimately it's a home entertainment system that can perform a wide variety of tasks. And while Sony highlights its DVD capabilities, it doesn't reveal the ability to turn standard-definition DVDs into high-definition.

If you own a HD system and are watching a DVD through your PS3, press the "Triangle" button and choose "AV settings." You will see a selection of options, including a full upscale of DVD content to HD.

    Hacking Any Password

    • Using a PS3 that has been locked out of Internet access or movie playback can be frustrating. But there is a simple way around it that can enable you to use locked features. Head to "System" and "System settings," then to "Restore default settings." This procedure resets all settings, including the password, which will return to 0000 (four zeros).
