Differences Between PS3 40 GB & 60 GB

Sony's PS3s models include the 60 GB hard drive and the follow-up 40 GB hard drive. When it first entered the market, the 40 GB model was priced roughly $100 to $200 cheaper than the 60 GB model. As of 2010, neither model was in production.
  1. Size

    • The 60 GB PS3 model has 50 percent more storage space than the 40 GB model. Some PS3 games require as much as 5 GB of hard disk space, which prompts some buyers to pay extra for the larger storage capacity models. However, many PS3 games require only a few megabytes for saved game files.

    Hardware

    • The 60 GB PS3 has four 2.0 USB ports and also has slots for a memory stick, SD card or flash memory. The 40 GB model only has two USB ports and does not have a flash card reader. The 60 GB model's power supply uses 180W while the 40 GB has just 135W. The 60 GB PS3 has two HDMI Ports for high definition connections. The 40 GB PS3 only has one.

    Backwards Compatibility

    • Original versions of the 60 GB PS3 could play PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. None of the 40 GB models can play PlayStation 2 games. Some 40 GB systems can play games from the PlayStation, but for the most part users must pay for and download "PlayStation Classics" games from the PlayStation Network to play older games on the PS3.

    Controller

    • The 60 GB system has a Sixaxis controller. It does not have vibration functionality. The 40 GB model had DualShock 3 controllers, which combine Sixaxis controller technology with the DualShock's vibration ability.
