How to Use a PS3 Remote With a PS2

Consumer technology progressed so greatly in the six years between the release of the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 that few features of the two systems are compatible. Whereas the PS2 used cables and infrared LEDs for its controllers and remotes, the PS3 uses Bluetooth technology to communicate between the console and any peripherals. This makes it impossible for the PS2 to connect with a PS3 remote. However, there is an infrared adapter available for the PS3 that allows a PS2 remote to be used with both machines.

Things You'll Need

  • PlayStation 2-compatible remote (must have an external infrared receiver)
  • PSX/PS2 controller-to-USB adapter

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the infrared receiver into the PS2 controller end of the USB adapter.

    • 2

Plug the adapter into any of the USB ports on the PlayStation 3.

    • 3

Use the PS2 remote to control the PS3 playback. The PS3 may be a little slow to respond, and not all of the functions of the PS2 remote are available for the PS3.
