Place the PlayTV module next to the PS3. Plug one end of a USB cable into the USB port on the PlayTV. Plug the other end of the USB cable into a USB port on the PS3.
Plug a coaxial cable from an outdoor antenna or from a cable box or satellite receiver into the PlayTV.
Turn the PS3 on. Insert the PlayTV included installation disc into the front loading slot on the PS3. Wait for the icon of PlayTV to appear on the Home menu.
Select the icon of PlayTV with the PS3's controller. Click the "A" button. Wait as the installation disc installs the PlayTV program onto the PS3's hard drive. Select "Yes" when the confirmation window appears on the screen. Click the "X' button.
Navigate through the menus that set the default functions (for example, setting "English" as the main language). Click the settings for whether you are using an external antenna or a cable box or satellite receiver. Select the "Continue" button when it is presented on the "System Connection completed" screen. Click the "X" button.
Wait as the PlayTV program scans the channels for TV shows in your area. Click the "PS" button on the controller when asked to do so.
Wait as the PS3 reboots. Select the PlayTV icon. Press the "X" button.
Select a TV channel from the main menu. Navigate to a TV show to record from the list presented beneath the days of the week. Click the "X" button to set the program to record to the hard drive. Quit the program.
Return to PlayTV after the program has been recorded. Select "Recordings" from the main menu. Select the TV show from the list on the screen. Press the "X" button to watch the TV show.
Place the remote template included with the PlayTV on the PS3 remote control. Control the TV show playback using the buttons peeking through the holes in the remote template.
