PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Specs

The PlayStation 3 is a console video game system developed by Sony Corporation. The system includes a hard drive of various sizes, depending on when the system was purchased. Upgrading a PlayStation 3 hard drive involves switching out the hard drive for a different hard drive using a mini Phillips screwdriver. An external USB hard drive also can be attached to the PS3 for additional storage.
  1. Hard Drive Size

    • Any 2.5-inch SATA notebook-styled hard drive is compatible with the PlayStation 3. Larger-sized hard drives cannot be used with the PlayStation 3 as the hard drive will not fit in the PS3 case. Solid-State drives also are not compatible with the PlayStation 3.

    Data Storage Size Compatibility

    • The PlayStation 3 is able to recognize and utilize hard drives of any data size. The system can be purchased with a hard drive up to 250 gigabytes in size, but all size hard drives are supported as long as they are 2.5-inch SATA drives.

    RPM Considerations

    • The hard drive included on the PlayStation 3 runs at 5,400 rpm. A faster 7,200 rpm hard drive is compatible with the PlayStation 3 as well.
