How to Open a NAT Type for the PS3

The PlayStation 3 from Sony can connect to the internet in three ways. A Type 1 NAT means the system is connected directly to an internet modem with an Ethernet cable. A Type 2 NAT means the system is connected to either a wired or wireless router. A Type 3 NAT means you are connected to a wired or wireless router, but there are no open ports and you may experience issues getting online. To connect with a Type 3 NAT, open the ports that the PS3 uses so you can get a clean internet connection.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your web browser and enter the IP address of the router you are using into the address bar. If you do not know your default IP address, click the "Start" button on your computer and select "Run." Type in "cmd" and press enter. In the Command window, type "ipconfig" and press enter. The Default Gateway will be the IP address of your router.

    • 2

Go to the Port Forwarding menu. The title and location of this menu will vary based on the make and model of your router. It can also be found under the Settings or Firewall menu.

    • 3

Add the ports that the PS3 uses to the forward list. This includes 80 TCP, 443 TCP, 5223 TCP, 3478 UDP, 3479 UDP and 3658 UDP. You will need to add each port individually and assign them to the same IP address.
