Opening the PS3 Chassis
Unplug all cords from the back of your PS3. Place the console on a flat work surface.
Turn the PS3 upside-down and remove the black warranty sticker from the console base. Pull away the rubber foot residing below the sticker to reveal a Torx security screw.
Remove the security screw with a Torx security screwdriver. Slide the plastic faceplate with the "PlayStation 3" logo downward and pull away to detach.
Remove all eight exposed screws from the plastic console shell with the Phillips screwdriver.
Pry the upper console shell away from the rest of the console, starting from the rear edge. Place the shell off to the side.
Disassembling the Blu-ray Drive
Disconnect the disc drive's power cable from the PS3 motherboard. The cable is located just to the left of the drive bay.
Lift the disc drive from the main PS3 body and disconnect the ribbon cable by lifting the small brown wedge attached to the connector. Place the main PS3 body aside.
Flip the disc drive over and remove both screws attached to the exposed circuit board using a small Phillips screwdriver.
Remove the five screws along the edge of the drive base. Three are just under the circuit board; the other two are on the opposite edge.
Pull the protective metal shell away from the main disc drive assembly. Disconnect the ribbon attaching the circuit board to the assembly and place the circuit board aside.
Flip over the disc drive assembly and remove the magnetically attached plastic wheel. Remove the five screws visible along the edge of the assembly.
Lift away the rectangular plastic plate and set it aside, exposing the Blu-ray player's internal components.
Remove all visible screws to detach the central drive core, which contains the Blu-ray laser. Gently pry the central drive core away from main drive assembly with your screwdriver along the core edges.
