My PS3 Won't Play an MP4 Video Only Audio

Many Playstation 3 owners have received the dreaded "unsupported data" error while trying to play a video on their gaming system. Despite the PS3's popularity as a gaming platform, getting video to play on the PS3 can sometimes be an arduous experience. While the PS3 technically supports videos in MP4 format, it plays such a strange mish-mash of codecs and subformats that sometimes a video will lose its visual aspect altogether, only playing the audio portion of the file.

Instructions

Download GSpot to troubleshoot your videos codecs. A codec codes and decodes video, and the PS3 can only read certain kinds of codecs. Click "File", then "Open". Select your video and compare the codec with the ones supported by the PS3.

Open a PS3 video converter like PS3 Video 9 or PS3 Video Converter. Click the "Add" or "Browse" buttons, depending on your program of choice, and select your MP4 file. Click the "Convert" button and create a PS3 compatible video.
