To make navigating DVDs and Blu-rays easier, Sony released the official Blu-ray remote control for the PS3. Most universal remotes are not compatible with the PS3. Unlike traditional remotes that rely on infrared technology, the Blu-ray remote control uses Bluetooth, which allows you to use your remote control without pointing it directly at the PS3. Like other wireless PS3 peripherals, the Blu-ray remote control must be synced to the PS3 before it becomes operational.

Turn on the PS3. After the PS3 main menu loads, scroll to the "Settings" sub-menu. Select "Accessory Settings."

Select "Register BD Remote Control." When prompted, simultaneously press the "START" and "ENTER" buttons on the Blu-ray remote control.

Complete the on-screen button test to finish syncing the remote.
