How to Connect an External Hard Drive to a Sony PS3 USB to Play DivX & AVI Files

The PlayStation 3 game console from Sony is designed to do more than play games. It has a built-in media player that has had support for many formats of video file added since the system was launched, and its USB ports make it easy to get those video files to the PS3. Watching DivX- or AVI-format movies stored on a USB external hard drive through the PlayStation 3 is simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the external hard drive's USB cable into a USB slot on the PS3. The PS3's USB slots are on the left side of its front face.

    • 2

Go to the "Video" column of the PS3's main menu and highlight the external hard drive. It should be listed near the bottom of the column as a "USB Device."

    • 3

Press "Triangle" and select "Display All" from the menu pane that opens on the right side of the screen. This displays the external hard drive's file system, as it would be seen on a computer. Navigate to the DivX or AVI movie file you want to watch and press "X" to begin playback.
