How to Repair a PS3 Optical Lens

The Blu-ray drive in Sony's Playstation 3 is powered by a blue laser that reads the data on game disks and Blu-ray videos. When the lens on the PS3's Blu-ray drive becomes dirty or cracked, the drive won't be able to read the disk data and your games or movies won't load properly. If your PS3 is out of warranty, this can be an expensive fix. If you want to try doing it yourself, replacing the laser and lens in a PS3 requires only a few screwdrivers and some time.

Things You'll Need

  • Torx T10 screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the PS3 from the power cord and A/V cable. Set the PS3 on a table so the front is facing you. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry off the rubber screw cover on the left side of the console. Use a Torx T10 screwdriver to remove the screw hidden under the cover. Slide the PS3 nameplate to the left and lift it off the console.

    • 2

Remove the eight screws holding the top cover of the PS3 in place. Carefully pry up the back end of the top cover and slowly tilt it toward you, prying it up along the sides as you go. Pull the top cover off of the console.

    • 3

Remove the Blu-ray drive. Disconnect the power cable on the right side from the motherboard. Turn the drive over and disconnect the ribbon cable on the underside from the motherboard.

    • 4

Remove the three black screws along the front edge of the drive and two silver screws along the back edge. Lift the metal top cover off the Blu-ray drive.

    • 5

Remove the screws holding the top black plastic cover of the drive in place. Lift up and remove the plastic cover to reveal the Blu-ray laser and lens assembly. Remove the four screws holding the laser and lens assembly in place. Lift the assembly up and out of the drive housing.

    • 6

Slide the new laser and lens assembly into place and replace the four screws.

    • 7

Reverse the steps to reassemble the PS3.
