PS3 Controller Functions

When the Sony PlayStation 3 first launched, it was bundled with the Sixaxis controller. The Sixaxis featured a layout nearly identical to previous PlayStation controllers, with the exceptions being the feel of the R1 and L1 buttons--and more notably, the lack of vibration support. The Sixaxis has since been replaced with the DualShock 3, which includes all of features found on the Sixaxis with the addition of vibration support.
  1. Vibration

    • The DualShock 3 is Sony's primary controller for the PS3. The original DualShock released for the original PlayStation, while not the first controller to include vibration support, set the standard for future controllers as it did not require batteries. The DualShock 3 controller continues this tradition. The controller will vibrate slightly while navigating menus and in games that support it. The vibration feature can be turned off at any time, which will help preserve the controllers wireless charge.

    Sixaxis Motion Technology

    • The motion technology allows you to move the controller in a direction determined by the game or application in a manner that creates a reaction on screen. The controller can detect quick movements, burst of movements, tilts and the direction in which the controller is pointing when in relation to the PS3 system.

    Wireless/Wired

    • Both the Sixaxis and DualShock 3 are wireless controllers. Included with both is a USB cable that is used to charge the controller and synchronize it to the PS3. Controllers can be used while it is charging and, when disconnected, will function as a wireless controller with no interference. Up to seven controllers can be connected wirelessly to the PS3 simultaneously.
