How to Backup a PS3 to an External Hard Drive

Anything can happen to your PlayStation 3 console, so it is always best to keep a backup of your data. This way, if anything does happen to your PlayStation 3, then you can just restore your old data and continue using a PlayStation 3 as if nothing happened. The restore feature is in the same system settings folder as the back up data utility. You should try to keep your backup as up to date as possible so you do not lose information.

     Plug the external hard drive into the PlayStation 3's USB port.

     Turn on the PlayStation 3.

     Go to "Settings," then "System Settings."
