How to Set Up a Japan PS3 Account on a U.S. PlayStation

The Sony PlayStation 3 home video game console features online network functionality through the PlayStation network. Downloadable games, demos, add-on content, videos and other types of media content are available for download from the PlayStation Store. Content offered through the store varies based on region, with different games and demos based on each PlayStation Store's country of origin. PS3 owners in the United States can create an additional account authorized to access stores in other regions such as Japan. Due to language barriers, creating an international account requires an understanding of what each stage requires in order to successfully complete the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Highlight "Create New User" from the "Users" section of the PlayStation 3 menu, located at the far left-hand side of the screen and press the "X" button. Name the account whatever you wish, and press the "X" button to confirm the user creation. Make sure you are logged in as the new user to continue.

    • 2

Highlight "PlayStation Store" from the "Network" section of the menu and press the "X" button. Highlight "Yes, I want to create a new account," and press "X" to proceed to the next screen.

    • 3

Set your new account region as Japan from the top section of the menu. Leave the language setting alone, as English is not available as an option, unless you understand one of the language settings offered. All following steps will be in Japanese during the account creation process. Enter any birthdate you wish into the bottom setting. Highlight "Continue" from the bottom of the screen to continue.

    • 4

Highlight the top option presented on the next screen and press the "X" button. This will designate the Japanese account as a master-level account. This account will not replace your primary PS3 account.

    • 5

Scroll to the bottom of the text presented on the next screen. This information is the terms of service and legal agreement for PSN use. Highlight the right button at the bottom of the screen and press "X."

    • 6

Highlight the top text box on the screen and press "X." Use the on-screen keyboard to enter a valid email address and press "Start" to confirm. Make sure the address is not the same one used for your primary U.S. PlayStation account. Repeat the same text entry process to enter a password in the second text field and confirm your password in the third text field. Enter whatever characters you wish into the fourth and fifth text fields to enter your password security question and answer. Highlight the button at the bottom-center of the screen and press "X" to continue.

    • 7

Enter a PlayStation network gamer name into the text field on the next screen. Ensure that you do not enter the same name that you use for your primary U.S. account. The gamer name will be displayed when playing online using the account.

    • 8

Enter the first and last name you wish to use for the account into the first and second text fields. The third and fourth text fields require information, and any characters entered will work. Set your gender by checking one of the two options listed below the text fields. Highlight the right-hand button at the bottom of the screen and press "X" to continue.

    • 9

Enter address information into the text fields. The address created will not require verification, so any information will work. The first text field is the street number, so be sure to enter numbers into the field among any other characters you choose. The second text field is a drop-down menu. Select the second option from the menu, which is the first option with only three Japanese characters. The remaining four text fields are address-related and any characters entered will suffice. Highlight the right-hand button at the bottom of the screen and press "X" to continue.

    • 10

Highlight the second option on the next screen and press the "X" button, to indicate that you do not wish to enter payment information. In the event that you have an international or Japanese credit card and wish to enter your credit card information, select the first option and enter your information into the text fields. Once you have declined or finished entering payment information the process will proceed to the next screen.

    • 11

Uncheck the box on the next screen. Highlight the right-hand button on the bottom of the screen and press "X" to continue.

    • 12

Highlight the right-hand button at the bottom of the screen and press "X" to confirm your account information and continue. Highlight the button at the bottom of the next screen and press "X" to confirm the email address and finish the creation of your account. The PS3 will ask you to choose an avatar picture for your account. Highlight the picture you wish to use and press "X." Your Japanese account is now finished and can be used to access free demos and content exclusive to the Japanese PlayStation Store.
