How do I Play Imports on a 60GB PS3?

All models of the Sony PlayStation 3 home video game console are designated as region-free for gaming. This means that any PlayStation 3 console purchased can be used to play game titles from any region. Japanese and North American PlayStation 3 consoles will play titles published in the other region without any issues, as both systems use NTSC display standards. However, due to display issues between NTSC and PAL, North American and Japanese PS3s must be connected to an HDTV to play European games to compensate for the display differences.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your PlayStation 3 to a high-definition television. The PS3 can be connected by plugging a HDMI cable or component cable into the back of the console and the applicable ports on an HDTV.

    • 2

Turn on your PS3. Highlight "Display Settings" from the "Settings" section of the PS3 menu and press the "X" button. Highlight "Video Output Settings" and press "X." Select the type of video connection cable you used in Step 1 and press right on the direction pad. Select "Automatic" to have the system set your resolution or "Custom" to manually set resolution and press "X." Be sure to set a resolution of at least 720p to allow your console to display video output compatible with European PAL standards. Confirm your settings and press the "X" button to finish.

Purchase an import PlayStation 3 game. Websites such as Play-Asia and Renchi offer import PlayStation 3 games from around the world.

Insert the game into the PlayStation 3 drive and select the game from the "Game" menu. The title will operate as any regular PS3 game, but note that only specific titles will have the option to change the language of audio and subtitles.
