How to Play an MKV on a PS3 Media Player

The Playstation 3 can play video files in many different formats with its built-in media player, but it does not support the Matroska Video, or MKV, format. If you want to play a video that is encoded in MKV format on your PS3, first you have to convert it to a format the PS3 supports using specialized video-conversion software. TsMuxer, MP4 Converter and Xvid4PSP are three video-conversion programs that are available for free online.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install one of the video-conversion programs linked in the Resources section.

    • 2

Open the conversion program once it finishes installing.

    • 3

Load the MKV video you want to play into the conversion program. If you're using tsMuxer, click on the "Input" tab, then click the "Add" button. If you're using MP4 Converter, click the "Add file" button in the blue bar near the top of the program window. In Xvid4PSP, click on the "Open" button. In all three programs, a browser window will open.

    • 4

Browse to the MKV file stored on your computer and double-click it.

    • 5

Choose a video format into which you want to convert the MKV file. In tsMuxer, click the "MT2S muxing" button in the "Output" section of the window. In MP4 Converter, click on the video file where it's listed in the main window, then click the "Profile" drop-down menu, and then select a format ending in ".mp4" or ".avi." In Xvid4PSP, click the "Format" menu and select "AVI."

    • 6

Click the "Change level" box under "General track options" in tsMuxer, then type "4.1" into the test field beside it. Skip this step if you're not using txMuxer.

    • 7

Click the "Start muxing" button in tsMuxer, the "Convert" button in MP4 Converter or the "Encode" button in Xvid4PSP to convert the MKV file into a format that will play on the PS3.

    • 8

Plug a USB memory stick or USB hard drive into a USB slot on your computer. Click "Open folder to view files" in the window that pops up. Copy the converted MKV file onto a USB memory stick or USB external hard drive.

    • 9

Open another browser window, navigate to the location the video file was saved to and drag the movie file over to the USB device window. Most programs save converted videos to the "My Videos" folder in "C:\Users\(your user name)."

    • 10

Click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the taskbar at the bottom right hand corner of your screen and select the USB device you saved the movie to.

    • 11

Pull the USB device's connector from the USB slot when you're told it's safe to remove your device.

    • 12

Plug the memory stick or hard drive into one of the PS3's USB ports. The USB ports are on the front left side of the PS3.

    • 13

Go to the "Video" column of the PS3 menu, highlight the USB device you plugged in and press the triangle button. Select "Display all" from the menu on the right.

    • 14

Navigate to the converted MKV file on the USB device and press"X" to begin playback on the PS3 media player.
