How to Troubleshoot a Playstation Home DNS Error

There are several reasons a PS3 might display a DNS error while accessing PlayStation Home or any of the other online features. Most of them indicate minor problems and a few simple troubleshooting actions should get your PS3 back online. Whether the problem lies within the router or the PS3 itself, you should be able to solve the problem with a little bit of networking know-how.

Disconnect the router from its power source and, if it has one, press and hold the reset button for 15 seconds. Reconnect the router to its power source and try connecting to the Internet with the PS3.

Access the router's settings through the computer's web browser by typing "192.168.1.1" into the navigation bar and press "Enter" to reach the router's settings page. Enter your username and password; if you've never done this before, click the "OK" button without entering any information and set up a username and password later. Locate the UPnP Options--this varies by router so check the manual for specific details--and disable them. Click "Apply" and wait for the changes to take place, then try logging on with the PS3.

Download the latest firmware for the PS3 from the website listed in Resources. While the USB flash drive is connected to the computer, create a folder in it with the name "GAME" using all capital letters. Click the "Download Now" button on the website and save the update file to this folder. Disconnect the flash drive from the computer and connect it to the PS3. Access the drive via the "Game" menu on the XMB main menu and select the update file to install it.

Disconnect the PS3 from the router and connect it directly to the modem. If the PS3 works at this point, there may be something wrong with the router. Contact the manufacturer for warranty and repair information.
