Formatting the Drive
Plug the thumb drive into a PC. Thumb drives have a USB interface, which most computers built after 2001 include. The thumb drive should have enough memory space to hold the backed up information from the PlayStation 3. Plug in the thumb drive to any USB outlet.
Determine which drive letter your thumb drive is in. When plugged in, go to the "My Computer" section of your PC. This folder is normally accessible as an icon on the desktop or by clicking on the "Start" icon, often located in the bottom left of the screen. On the "My Computer" screen, you will notice that every drive, or source of input that is currently connected to the computer, has a letter associated with it. For example: "Drive: F". Determine which letter is your thumb drive.
Use the Run function of your PC. Clicking on the "Start" icon will bring up a list of options, one of which is the "Run" function. Select Run. Input "CMD" without the parentheses.
Input "format /FS:FAT32 X:". The next screen that pops up will be a black screen, in which you do command functions. Input "format /FS:FAT32?" without the parentheses and subbing the letter of your thumb drive for the question mark. This process will automatically format your thumb drive to FAT32 and in turn make it able to interface with the PS3.
