How to Wipe a PS3 Hard Drive

If you are having trouble with your PlayStation 3, it may be best to wipe your hard drive and start the system from scratch. You may need to do this are if you are getting constant freezes or errors. Wiping the hard drive resets the system back to factory default. By wiping the hard drive, you will lose all of your saved data and downloads unless you are able to use the ̶0;Backup Utility̶1; to move your data to a USB memory device. Depending on how bad your system is, you may not be able to do that.

Instructions

      Power off your PS3 if you have it turned on.

      Press and hold the ̶0;Power̶1; button on the front of the system.

      Release the ̶0;Power̶1; button after you hear three beeps.

      Turn on a PS3 controller.

      Select ̶0;System̶1; and then ̶0;Format.̶1;

    • 6

      Choose ̶0;Full Format̶1; and wait for the hard drive to be completely cleaned of all data. This process can take several hours depending on how much information is on the hard drive.
