How to Play AVI on the PS3

The PlayStation 3 gained popularity not only as a premium video game console, but also as a media powerhouse capable of playing back Blu-Ray discs. In addition to these features, the PlayStation 3 is also a very capable digital media player. If you have AVI-formatted videos that you can transfer to a portable storage device, you can view them on your PS3.

Things You'll Need

Portable storage device (USB memory stick, portable hard drive, SD card, etc.)

Instructions

  Transfer your AVI files from the computer to a removable storage device compatible with the PlayStation 3. You can use either a USB drive, portable hard drive or high-density memory stick.

  Connect the removable media to your PlayStation 3. If you are using a USB stick or removable hard drive, connect it to one of the four USB ports on the front of the PlayStation 3. If you are using an SD card, insert it into one of the PlayStation 3&'s SD card slots on the front of the console.

  Turn the PS3 on and then scroll to the "Video" icon on the cross media bar (XMB.) Then scroll down to the device that contains your video files. Select it and press the triangle button. Select "Show files" from the menu.

  Scroll down to the AVI movie you want to play and then press "X" to begin playback. If you want to exit the video playback utility at any time, press the circle button.
