How to Update a PS3 So it Can Play PS2 Games

Although it is possible to play Sony PlayStation 2 video games on the newer PS3, you do need to keep in mind not all PS3s possess this capability. This is due to some of the firmware installed on specific versions. The PS3 running a 40 gigabyte memory is not able to play any previous game titles and there are no updates that correct this issue. However, if you have a different model, you can play PlayStation 2 titles.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-check to make sure what PlayStation 3 version you are running. If it is the newer Slim model, you aren&'t going to have a problem. Additionally, the older PS3 with a 20 or 60 gigabyte memory system allows you to play PS2 games.

    • 2

Power on the Sony PlayStation 3 and eject any disc currently inside the disc drive.

    • 3

Insert the PS2 game disc and wait for the hardware to read the disc. A prompt window appears, stating the game is an older PlayStation 2 format.

    • 4

Click "Yes" to proceed and the PlayStation 3 uploads necessary file updates. This process takes a few minutes. Once complete, the game loads onto the screen, ready for you to play.
