How to Connect a PS3 to a Surround System

The PlayStation 3 game console can be hooked up to your entertainment center&'s surround-sound system for optimal audio quality. You can simply connect it using the RCA composite connections the console normally uses, but the console and most present-day surround-sound systems can also use a digital-optical audio connection. The PS3 supports a number of digital-audio systems like Dolby and Sony. If you use this connection, you will need to reconfigure the console&'s audio settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the PlayStation console&'s audio output to the input of the surround-sound system&'s central receiver. Your options are either a digital-optical connection--which is best--or the red and white plugs from the console&'s main RCA composite cable.

    • 2

Attach each of the surround sound&'s speakers to the central receiver. Each of the left and right speakers, plus the subwoofer, will have its own port to connect to. On most systems, insert the speaker&'s red and black wires into the red and black port holes and push down on the clamps.

    • 3

Set the central receiver to the correct input using its input switch; set it to either RCA or optical depending on the connection you used.

    • 4

Turn on the PS3 console, go to the system menu using the controller and choose "Settings" if you used the digital-optical connection. Go to "Sound Settings" and then "Audio Output Settings." Choose "Optical Digital."

    • 5

Use the right arrow button on the controller to select the type of digital surround-sound system you are using. If the version isn&'t available on the drop-down list, you&'ll have to reconnect the system with the RCA cables.

Press the controller&'s "O" button to save your settings.
