How to Play AVI Films on a PS3

Besides playing games and DVDs, the PlayStation 3 can also play films stored as AVI movie files from its hard drive or a USB memory stick. More video formats are supported as Sony continues to update the PS3&'s system software and support for most types of AVI movies has been available since the system launched.

      Play the AVI file by selecting it from under the "Video" tab of the main menu, if is stored on your PS3 already. If it is not on your PS3 yet, you will need to copy it to your PS3 using a USB memory stick.

      Transfer the AVI file using a USB memory stick.

      Insert the USB memory stick into your computer. Copy the AVI format movie file you want to watch from the location it is stored on your computer onto the memory stick. Remove the memory stick when it has finished copying.

      Insert the memory stick into your PS3. The PS3&'s USB slots are on the front face of the console, below and to the left of the disc loading slot.

      Go to the "Video" tab of the PS3 main menu.

      Highlight the "USB Device" option. The memory stick&'s product name will be included in parentheses beside "USB Device." Press "Triangle" to bring up a menu on the right side of the screen. Select "Display All" from the menu.

      Select the AVI movie you wish to watch from the list the PS3 displays. All the folders and files on the memory stick will be displayed, as well as any hidden folders or files. Video files will display a small line of text beneath the file&'s title, telling you the date the file was created and how long the video is.
