How to Reset a PS3 Hard Drive

The Sony PlayStation 3 comes standard with an internal hard drive to store all of your system information. Game saves, downloadable content, movies, music and pictures can all be stored and viewed directly from your PS3. If you are experiencing problems with your hard drive or you just want to reset it to clear off all of your information, you will have to make use of the Format Utility to reset the hard drive to factory settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your PS3 and navigate to the “Settings” tab on your systems Xross Media Bar.

    • 2

Select the “System Settings” option from the settings list.

    • 3

      Select “Format Utility.”

    • 4

Select your hard drive as the drive that you wish to format.

    • 5

Select either “Quick Format” or “Full Format.” The “Quick Format” option will take less time to complete, so if you want a faster format, choose that option. The “Full Format” option will take more time but perform a more complete format. This option is recommended if you want to clear any sensitive data stored on your system.

    • 6

Select “Use All for the PS3 System” when asked to install the hard drive partition. This ensures that the entire drive will be used for PS3 storage.
