Go to the PS3 System Updates Web page on your computer. Press the "Download" button under System Updates, and allow the update to download. It may be easiest to save the download on the Windows desktop. Save it as "PS3UPDAT.PUP".
Insert the USB flash drive into the computer. Double-click the USB flash drive icon in My Computer.
Right-click in an empty space within the USB folder and select "New Folder" from the drop-down menu. Name the folder "PS3." Double-click to open the new "PS3" folder. Right-click anywhere inside the folder and select "New Folder" again. Name the new folder "UPDATE." The UPDATE folder should be located inside the PS3 folder on the USB flash drive.
Drag the System Update download saved on the computer, and drop it in the USB flash drive's "UPDATE" folder.
Insert the USB flash drive into the PS3. Turn on the PS3.
Select "Settings" from the home menu. Choose "System Update" and click the "X" button on the controller. Select "Update Via Storage Media," and press "X." The console will search for update material located on your USB flash drive. Press "X" once the update is found to start the process. The power button on the console and the controller will be inactive once the update is started. Don't remove the USB until the console notifies you that the update is complete.
