Troubleshooting Sound for Playstation 3

Like any sound-producing electronic device, the Sony PlayStation 3 home entertainment system is susceptible to audio issues which can ruin your gaming, music or movie experience. If you notice problems with your PlayStation 3's audio, try troubleshooting the problem before sending the console to Sony for repair or replacement. Oftentimes audio issues aren't as serious as they seem and are caused by poor setup, loose connections or damaged cables, all problems you can remedy on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

      Power off the PlayStation 3.

    • 2

Replace any cables that appear frayed, worn or damaged.

    • 3

Disconnect any cables connected to the PlayStation 3, the display monitor or external speakers, and reconnect them firmly into their proper input.

    • 4

Shut down the system so it's in standby mode. Hold down the power/reset button on the console until it switches on and goes back into standby mode. Power on the PS3 again and it will have adjusted to the default audio and video settings.

    • 5

Power on the PlayStation 3 without a disc in the console and manually adjust the system's audio output settings by scrolling to the "Settings" column and selecting "Sound Settings." Choose "Audio Output Settings" and whether your audio connection is HDMI, Optical Digital, or Audio Input Connector/SCART/AV MULTI. Press "X" to confirm the selction.

    • 6

Set the "Audio Multi-Output" setting in the Sound Settings menu to "On" if sound is running through multiple connectors simultaneously.

    • 7

Shut down and power off the PS3, disconnect it from the wall outlet and connect a different audio cable to the console.

    • 8

Connect the PlayStation 3 to another display to see if this resolves the issue.
