How to Install an OS on a PS3

The PlayStation 3 allows a user to install an operating system as a booting option. In order to install an operating system, the PlayStation 3 cannot be from the CECH-2000 series PlayStation 3 or any models after the CECH-2000 series. In addition, the PlayStation 3 system software or firmware cannot be version 3.21 or later. If the PlayStation 3 meets these criteria, then the user can run a separate operating system on the PlayStation 3. The user must install Linux before installing another operating system.

Linux installation CD
Writable DVD or USB external hard drive

  Download a bootloader onto the computer if the Linux system does not come with a bootloader (see Resources). Rename the bootloader "otheros.bld."

  Create a folder called "PS3" in either the external hard drive or in a DVD. Create a folder called "otheros" in the "PS3" folder. Move the bootloader to this folder.

  Insert the external hard drive or DVD into the PlayStation 3. Using the PlayStation 3 controller, go to "Settings," "System Settings," then "Install Other OS." Follow the instructions on the screen.

  Use the PlayStation 3 controller to go to "Settings," "System Settings," then "Default System." Select "Other OS."

  Insert the Linux installation disc and follow the onscreen instructions to install Linux. After installing Linux, you can install other operating systems such as Windows from Linux.
