How to Make the 40 GB PS3 Play PS2 Games

The PlayStation 3 is more than just a video game console. It also can play Blu-Ray DVDs and even connect to the Internet. However, one drawback is that some PlayStation 3 models, specifically ones with 40GB hard drives, can't play PlayStation 2 games. The good news is that there is an easy fix to this problem, and it involves upgrading your PS3's hard drive. This may sound highly technical, but you can actually get it done in only a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your PlayStation and remove any A/V cables or controllers from the ports on the device.

    • 2

Use your fingers to remove the rectangular panel on the side of the unit. This is the hard drive compartment cover, and you will now see a single screw holding the hard drive in place.

    • 3

Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw. Then grip the small metal tab in the middle of the hard drive cover and pull the hard drive tray from its compartment.

    • 4

Remove the screws from each corner of the hard drive tray, and then remove the actual rectangular hard drive from the tray.

    • 5

Replace the old hard drive with the new hard drive. You're going to want to purchase the same hard drive from your PlayStation retailer (or online) that is used for the PlayStation models that are able to play PS2 games. These are usually 80 GB hard drives made specifically for the PS3.

Secure the new hard drive to the tray, replace the tray and screw the hard drive cover. You are all done.
