Memory
The biggest, and most obvious, difference between these two models is the amount of memory on the hard drive. One has 20 gigabytes, while the other has 60. In terms of video game systems, memory is important because is allows the player to save game progress, download content for games, download new games and import and download music and movies.
Price
At release, the 20GB model was priced at $499, while the 60GB was priced at $599. Over time, Sony reduced prices in an effort to compete with rivals' prices. Currently the Gamestop website has refurbished 20GB models listed at $299.99, and it lists refurbished 60GB models at $349.99.
Features and Specs
The 20GB and 60GB models both have very similar features and specifications (specs), save for a few differences.
Both models have the capability to play CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays. Both models have four USB ports for use with attachments such as flash drives and controller chargers. Additionally, both models have HDMI capability, are able to play Playstation 2 games and come packaged with one pS3 controller.
The 60GB model has two advantages over the 20GB model; the first being that the 60GB has wireless access and has slots for a memory stick and SD flash card (useful for uploading pictures from a digital camera).
Availability
As of 2010, Sony stopped production on both the 20GB and 60GB models. However, many video game stores such as Gamestop (see Resources) have refurbished (used) units available for purchase.
Other Models
From the PS3's initial release in 2006 to 2010, Sony released five new PS3 models: 40GB, 80GB, 120GB, 160GB and 250GB. The 120GB and 250GB are both "slim" models, with smaller designs than the original models. As of 2010, only the 120GB and 250GB models were in production by Sony. However, many of the other models can be found both new and refurbished in retail stores, on the Internet and in video game stores.
