How to Fix a PS3 Laser

Any video game system that uses discs to store game data on have a little circular laser that is used to read the discs. The lens of the laser is very fragile and when dust collects on the lens it will not be able to read discs. If the lens of your PS3 stops reading discs and your warranty is out you can take your PlayStation 3 apart and clean the lens to get it working again as long as it isn't scratched.

Things You'll Need

  • Number 10 safety torque screw

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the PS3 from the wall and the TV. Remove the security tamper proof sticker on the left side of your PlayStation 3. Doing so voids warranty. Remove the rubber stopper behind the sticker you just removed.

    • 2

Use a Number 10 safety torque screw driver to remove the screw behind the rubber stopper. Slide the top cover off. Remove the seven screws you just uncovered. Make sure you keep track of all the screws and the rubber stopper.

    • 3

Face the PlayStation 3 towards you. On the top of the back of the console are little plastic tabs; using your index fingers push the tabs towards you and pull the send cover up.

    • 4

Unplug the disc tray by pulling up on the cord at the front middle of your PS3. The disc drive is the big box on the right side of your PS3. After you unplug the first cord, angle the drive up and on the bottom of it there is a clip with a strip going inside the drive. Push on the clip and the strip should slide right out.

    • 5

Remove the four screws on the disc drive to get inside. There are a couple more screws inside that you will have to remove before the laser will be exposed. Once the laser is exposed do not touch it.

    • 6

Put some rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab or a cotton ball and gently rub the lens in a circular motion for just a few seconds. Screw all the screws back into the drive and put the PS3 back together. It should now be in working order.
