Backwards Compatibility
Backwards compatibility refers to the use of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games on the PS3 console. A consumer alert released by Sony notes the 40Gb and the 80Gb model CECHE01 configurations have limited backwards compatibility. The 60Gb configurations have backwards compatibility, though certain games may perform differently or not at all. The 80Gb model CECHK01 are not compatible and will not play PlayStation 2 format software, while some PlayStation software is compatible.
Flash Readers
The 60Gb and 80Gb (CECHE01) are the only consoles out of the three different configurations that came with a flash memory card reader. The 40Gb and 80Gb (CECHK01) configurations did not have this feature available.
Controllers
The different PS3 console configurations come with two different controllers: the Sixaxis controller or the DualShock 3 controller. The 60Gb and 80Gb (model CECHE01) models came with the Sixaxis controller. The 40Gb and 80Gb (CECHK01) models came with the DualShock 3 controller.
USB Ports
The number of USB ports available on each configuration varies. The 60Gb and 80Gb (model CECHE01) configurations came with four USB ports available for use, while the 40Gb and 80Gb (CECHK01) PS3 configurations came with only two USB ports.
SACD
SACD refers to Super Audio CD playback, and was limited to certain PS3 configurations. The 60Gb and 80Gb (CECHE01) came with the SACD feature, while the 40Gb and the 80Gb (CECHK01) configurations did not include this feature.
Current Models
The 40Gb, 60Gb and 80Gb configurations are no longer in production and have been replaced by the 120Gb and 250Gb configurations on the PlayStation website. The main difference between these two current configurations is the hard drive size and color availability.
