How to Make PS3 Desktop Themes

If you've searched the vast libraries of custom PS3 themes on official PlayStation websites and third-party sites and still haven't found a theme you really like, you can create your own theme using the PS3 theme editor used by the PlayStation Network team. You'll also need image editing software, like MS Paint, Adobe PhotoShop or any similar program with which you are familiar. With the right tools and a bit of knowledge, you can create custom PS3 themes using photos, downloaded images or even original images you create using your software.

Download the HowToMakePS3Themes.zip file from the link in References. Extract the files onto your computer by double-clicking the ZIP file once it has downloaded to your computer.

Open the HowToMakePS3Themes folder you just extracted. You will see four folders that make up the four steps to take when creating a new theme. Open the "Step 1_Create" folder. This folder holds all of the image files that make up a PS3 theme: the icons and background images. Note that nearly all of the files end with the PNG file extension. Open these files using your image editing software and edit them to your liking. You can change the color, add effects or even replace the old image with a new one. Just make sure that if you change the pixel dimensions during the editing process, you change them back to the original settings. For example, if the icon is 140 x 140 pixels when you start editing, make sure it's still 140 x 140 pixels when you finish. When you save the file, make sure you save it as a PNG file and that you do not change the file name.

Find the two wallpaper files in the "Step 1_Create" folder. They are named "wallpaper_HD-1.jpg" and "wallpaper_SD-1.jpg." These are the background images for your theme. HD and SD stand for High Definition and Standard Definition. Note that these images have the JPG file extension; when you're done editing them, you must save them with the same file extension and file name. The same rule applies regarding pixel dimensions as well. Use your image editing software to create a new, original image or set a photo or downloaded image as your theme's background.

Keep the "Step 1_Create" folder open and open the "Step 2_Assemble" folder. Resize the windows so you can see both of them and drag-and-drop the "PS3Theme_template.xml" file from the "Step 1_Create" folder to the "p3tcompiler.exe" file in the "Step2_Assemble" folder. A command window will pop up and the program will automatically create your new theme. Press "Enter" when the process is complete.

Plug your USP memory stick into the computer and open it by double clicking its corresponding icon in My Computer. Create a new folder with the name "PS3" and open it. Create another new folder with the name "THEME" and go back to the "Step 1_Create" window. Locate the file named "PS3Theme_template.p3t" and copy it to the "THEME" folder. Safely disconnect the USB memory stick from your computer and plug it into your PS3. Select "Theme Settings" from the "Settings" menu on the XMB dashboard. Select "Theme" and select the "Install" option to install your new theme to the PS3. Go to the "Theme List" and you'll find your new theme. Select it to set it as your current theme.
