How to Play a PS3 Online Without Broadband

Playing a PS3 online without broadband Internet access is possible, as long as you have a consistent dial-up Internet connection and a computer that can connect to the dial-up. The Internet sharing connection is made by using the Internet Connection Sharing utility provided with Microsoft Windows. This makes it easy to get online with your PS3 to play games if you do not have a broadband connection or if it is not working properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with wireless card
  • Dial-up Internet connection

Click "Network and Sharing Center," and then "Manage network connections" in the left-hand navigation column.

    • 3

Right-click on the dial-up or other type of Internet connection you want shared between the computer and PS3. Click "Properties."

    • 4

Click the "Sharing" tab. Check the box next to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" and click "OK."

    Start an Ad Hoc Network

    • 5

Click the "Start" menu, then click "Connect to."

Click "Set up a connection or network" and, when prompted, select the option to "Set up an ad hoc network." Click "Next."

    • 7

Create a network name and password. You can create a network name, also known as an SSID. This is the name of the wireless network to which the PS3 connects to use dial-up Internet. You can also keep unwanted users from connecting via your dial-up connection by using a WEP or WPA key to protect the network. Click "Next" and your shared dial-up connection will be completed.

Power on your PS3 without a disc in the drive. If you are currently playing a game, press the "PS" button on the controller and quit the game you are playing.

Select "Internet Connection Settings" and press the right arrow, at which point you will prompted to disconnect from any current network connections.

    • 11

Launch your PS3 web browser. Navigate to a web page to verify you are successfully connected via a non-broadband connection.
