How to Play PS2 Import Games on a PS3 Without Modding

Many games, including some for the PlayStation 2, are released only in countries such as Japan. Video gamers who want to own and play these games have to have them imported. If you own a PlayStation 3 system, you do not have to use a modified PS2 system to play the imported games. You can determine whether your PS3 system will play the imported PS2 games through backward compatibility. Backward compatibility is a process in which a game system will play games from an older model of the same system.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that your PlayStation 3 game console is a backward-compatible model. Look on the back of the system and find the model number. Model numbers with the beginning with the following letters can play all PS2 games: CECHA, CECHB, CECHC and CHECE.

    • 2

Determine the amount of USB ports located on your PlayStation 3 system. PS3 systems with two USB ports will not play PlayStation 2 games, while PS3 systems with four USB ports will. This is an alternative method of checking backward compatibility.

    • 3

Turn on the PS3 system and place the imported PS2 game disc that you want to play into the PS3's disc tray.

    • 4

Restart the PS3 game console in the case of a glitch with the PS2 game disc.
