Things You'll Need
Instructions
Set up your PS3 with an Internet connection, either through an Ethernet cord or through a wireless network. To connect the PS3 through Ethernet, you must run a cord from the modem to the Ethernet port, located on the back of the PS3 console. To set up a wireless connection, select "Settings" on the cross media bar, then "Network Settings," then "Internet Connection Settings." Finally select "Easy," to walk through the wireless setup process.
Sign up for a PlayStation Network (PSN) account, if you haven't already. Choose a username, keeping in mind this name will appear throughout the PlayStation Network. Once you have established an account, sign into the PlayStation Network.
Scroll to the far right side of the cross media bar, in order to access the "Friends" menu. Scroll up and find the "Add a Friend" icon, and press "X." Use your controller to type in your friend's username, then click "Send Friend Request." Your friend must accept the friend request.
Establish a common time that you and your friend would like to play a multiplayer PlayStation 3 game together. Decide which game to play.
Insert the game into the PS3 system, and run the game. Refer to the game menu or game manual to learn how to initiate a multiplayer game. Each individual game will have a different method of connecting to the online mode of play. Keep in mind, some games do not offer online play.
