How to Capture PlayStation 3 Video Games on a Computer

When connecting the Sony PlayStation 3 to your television you cannot capture video games in high definition (although you can run the system through a VCR and record onto a VHS tape). If you are looking to capture the video game content in high definition, it is possible to do so with a computer, as long as the computer has an HD video tuner built into the system (you can install the device yourself if your computer is presently without the tuner).

Things You'll Need

  • Sony PlayStation 3
  • HDMI cable
  • Computer
  • HD computer tuner

Instructions

Install the HD TV tuner onto your computer if you do not currently have one. HD tuners are found at most large electronic stores. Power down the computer, disconnect the cabling and Phillips screws along the backside of the system, open the case and insert the HD video tuner into one of the available PCI card slots (the card slots are horizontal slots found along the side of the large motherboard in the middle of the computer). Close up the computer, reattach the cables and screws, then power on the system. Install any drivers and software provided with the HD tuner card.

Plug the opposite end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port for the HD TV tuner on your computer.

Power on the Sony PlayStation 3, insert the video game, then launch the television viewing program that came with the TV tuner card. When the program loads it displays the Sony PlayStation 3 content.

Select to either start a new video game or load a current game on the PS3 main menu. When the game begins and you want to begin recording, click "Record" in the television-tuner software. The computer begins to capture your video game as if it were a movie. When you are done, click "Stop" and a "Save" window appears. Title the video and choose a location to save the video to. Click "OK" to complete the capture process and save the video to your computer.
