How to Put Backwards Compatibility on a 40Gb PS3

If you want your 40GB (gigabyte) Sony PlayStation 3 video game console to become backward compatible and play Sony PlayStation 2 video games, you're going to need to download and install a firmware update. The original factory firmware was not backward compatible with older games, but subsequent updates have unlocked these capabilities. You can download and install a firmware update through your Sony PlayStation 3's main menu.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your Sony PlayStation 3 and let the unit load until you see its main menu system.

    • 2

Use your PlayStation 3 controller to highlight the "Settings" option. Press the "X" controller button to enter the "Settings" menu.

    • 3

      Select "System Update."

    • 4

Select "Update via Internet." Your Sony PlayStation 3 will connect to the Internet and compare the firmware it is currently running to the latest version that is available online. If a newer version is available online, it will be automatically downloaded and installed. Your Sony PlayStation 3 will reset once this installation has finished.

    • 5

Insert a PlayStation 2 game disc into your newly updated Sony PlayStation 3. The PS2 game will now load just fine on your PS3.
