How to Play PlayStation 2 Games on PS3

Early models of the PlayStation 3 home entertainment system are capable of playing more than just PS3 titles. You can play PlayStation 2 games as well, provided your console supports backwards compatibility. Though the only models to support PS2 backwards compatibility are CECHA01, CECHB01, and CECHE01 (this number is printed on a sticker on the back of the console or on its box), running your old games on any of these consoles is simple and requires little effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Power on your PlayStation 3 without a game disc in the console so it goes to the home menu, also called the XMB (XrossMediaBar).

    • 2

Create a PS2 virtual memory card so you can save your games by using "left" and "right" on the controller to select "Game." Then use "up" and "down" to highlight "Memory Card Utility (PS/PS2)" and press "X." Choose "New Memory Card," then "Internal Memory Card (PS2)," and name the card.

    • 3

Insert a PlayStation 2 game disc into your console's disk drive.

    • 4

Scroll "left" and "right" on the XMB and highlight "Game" again.

    • 5

Highlight the PS2 game disc on the "Game" column by pressing "up" and "down" on the controller. Press "X" to start the game.
