How to Convert PS3 40G to Play PS2 Games

The 40GB version of Sony's PlayStation 3 video game console initially could not play all PlayStation 2 video games. These functions were enabled at a later date in the form of a firmware upgrade, which is an upgrade to the operating system that runs the console. If you want to make sure that your 40GB PlayStation 3 can play all of your favorite PlayStation 2 games, you'll need to convert the firmware that is currently running the machine to the latest version that is backward compatible with the older games.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the main menu on your Sony PlayStation 3. If your console is currently off, turn it on. If you're playing a game, press the "Home" button on the controller to exit out of what you're playing and return to the main menu.

    • 2

      Select "Settings."

    • 3

      Select "System Update."

    • 4

      Select "Internet Connection."

    • 5

Select "OK" to download the latest version of the firmware for your 40GB PlayStation 3 to your console. Once the file download is complete, your current firmware converts to the newest version. At that point, your 40GB PlayStation 3 is able to play PlayStation 2 games.
