How to Use a Multiple Partitioned External Hard Disk on PS3

PlayStation 3 (PS3) reads universal serial bus (USB) connections, which includes using USB external hard drives. However, the PS3 does not read the hard drive unless it is in FAT32 format. Once partitions are formatted into FAT32, the PS3 will read the partitions.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the USB drive to a computer. Then go to "My Computer" and click "Manage."

    • 2

Click "Disk Management" and select "New Partition."

    • 3

Click "Next" and then select the type of partition you want to create. Then click "Next." The possible partition types are: primary, extended or logical drive. The type of partition chosen depends on the user, but most users should select extended partition.

    • 4

Type the size of the hard drive and click "Next." Assign a drive letter and click "Next." The size will depend on the user's needs; often partitions are divided into proportionate sizes. For example, an 8-gigabyte hard drive with two partitions would have two partitions with 4 gigabytes each.

    • 5

Click "Format this partition with the following settings." Under settings, select "FAT32" and select "Next."

    • 6

Confirm the options and select "Finish."

    • 7

Remove the hard drive safely from the computer and connect the hard drive to the PS3. The PS3 should now read all partitions in FAT32.
