How to Play Imported PS2 Games on a PS3

Back in the day, many PlayStation 2 owners in the United States modified their consoles with a special chip because they wanted to play Japanese PlayStation 2 games. Because the games would not always be released in North America, the owners would take it upon themselves to import the games. Your PlayStation 2 may not work anymore or you may prefer your PlayStation 3; you can play those imported PlayStation 2 games on your new console.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if your PlayStation 3 is backward-compatible. Locate the model number of your console; it is typically located on the back of the console, toward the bottom.

Model numbers beginning with CECHA, CECHB, CECHC or CHECE are capable of playing PlayStation 2 games. CECHA and CECHB can run games without a hitch, but CECHC or CHECE models use software emulation, meaning you may run into a few glitches.

    • 2

Alternatively, determine the number of USB ports on your PS3. If your console has two ports, it cannot play PS2 games; the backward-compatible versions have four USB ports.

    • 3

Insert your imported PlayStation 2 game into the console and play the game.

    • 4

Restart your console if you encounter any kind of glitch on a CECHC or CECHE model.
