Backward Compatibility
The biggest difference among these consoles is their PlayStation 2 backward compatibility. The 60GB version featured full backward compatibility due to the PS2̵7;s engine, the Emotion Engine, being included in the system's hardware. The CECHE01 80GB version transferred the emulation from hardware based to software based, which reduced the number of PS2 games that were compatible. The CECHK01 and CECHL01 models removed backward compatibility altogether.
USB Ports
The 60GB version of the console came standard with four USB ports on the front of the console. The CECHE01 also featured four USB ports. By the time the CECHK01 and CECHL01 were introduced, the USB ports had been scaled back to only two.
SACD Support
SACD, or Super Audio CD, is a CD format that features high resolution audio in stereo and surround. The CECHA01 and the CECHE01 both supported this feature. This support was removed in the CECHK01 and CECHL01.
Included Controller
When the PS3 was first released, it came packaged with the Sixaxis controller. This controller was similar in design to the Dualshock 2 for the PS2, but added motion control and removed rumble support. This controller was packaged with both the CECHA01 and the CECHE01. The CECHK01 and the CECHL01 both came packaged with the Dualshock 3, which improved the Sixaxis by adding rumble support.
Memory Card Readers
Both the CECHA01 and CECHE01 came standard with memory slot readers. This included slots for memory stick cards, SD memory cards and CompactFlash cards. These memory slots were removed for the CECHK01 and CECHL01.
