How to Get a New 80Gb PS3 to Play PS2

In the buildup to the system's release, one of the PlayStation 3's most heralded features was its full backward-compatibility with PS2 titles, allowing every PS2 game to be played on the new system. Unfortunately, that wasn't how things turned out. Only certain models of PS3 allow for playing PS2 games, and only certain PS2 titles work on those systems. Only certain 80GB models are capable of playing PS2 games.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what PS3 model you have. The only 80GB model that contains backward-compatibility is the model that originally was released in August 2007.

    • 2

Locate the serial number. Find the white tag on the lower-left of the back of the console that reads "SERIAL" and is followed by a string of numbers and letters.

    • 3

Read the final seven characters in the serial code. If they read "CECHE01," then your 80GB PS3 is backward-compatible. If they read "CECHK01" or "CECHL01," your system won't work with PS2 games.

    • 4

Determine whether the PS2 game you wish to play is backward-compatible. Various websites list which games are compatible.

    • 5

Insert the PS2 title you wish to play into your PS3 and power on the console.
