How to Install Surround Sound With PS3

With Blu-Ray functionality and high definition games available on the PlayStation 3, not hooking up your surround sound system would be robbing yourself of an incredible experience. Even if you are using HDMI cables and your surround sound system does not feature HDMI inputs, you can still make it work. The hardest part about hooking up a PlayStation 3 to your surround sound system is setting up your surround sound system first.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble your surround sound system. Most systems have a center console that connects to a center speaker, a left speaker, a right speaker and surround speakers. Depending on how old your system is, you may have wireless speakers, which will make this process easy. If not, you will need to match the output cables from each speaker to the input ports on the back of the center console.

    • 2

Locate the inputs on the back of the center console and match up with the output cables from each speaker. Some speakers do not have easy inputs and instead need to be wired to black and red knobs on the back of the center console. Loosen the black and red knobs on the back of the center console and separate the strands of wire into pairs of red and black. If not specifically labeled, align the wires from left to right. Place each exposed wire end into the base of its respective knob, and tighten to securely fasten the wire in place. If correctly done, the exposed wire will be clamped into the knob base, making the audio connection.

Arrange all surround sound speakers to their proper locations. Generally, the center console should be located near the television, along with the center speaker. The left and right speakers are usually found on either side of the television, while the surround sound speakers are spread out across the room. Once all speakers are in place and connected, you are ready to connect the surround sound system to the PlayStation 3.

    • 4

Plug your HDMI cable from the PlayStation 3 into the HDMI port on your television. If you are not using a high definition television, replace the HDMI cable with the PlayStation 3 composite video and audio output cables.

    • 5

Connect audio cables from your television to your surround sound system. In the standard set of red, white, and yellow composite cables, these will be the red and white cables. You can substitute these cables with an HDMI cable if your surround sound system supports it. If not, your surround sound system should have red and white ports labeled audio input.
