How to Reset PlayStation 3 Display Settings

If you had a high-definition television when you first set up your PlayStation 3, you may not even realize that the console is defaulted to play on a standard-definition display. If this is the case, you may have completely ignored or thrown away the standard audio and video composite cables, opting for the HDMI cable hookup instead. If you never set up your PlayStation 3 on a standard-definition television again, you will not have a problem, but if you do, your display settings will need to be reset.

Things You'll Need

  • Audio/video composite cables with PS3 output cable
  • Standard-definition television

Instructions

Plug in the PlayStation 3 power cable into an electrical outlet. Plug the PlayStation 3 audio and video output cable into back of the PlayStation 3 console. Locate the audio and video input ports on your television. Most standard televisions have at least two audio and video inputs. These inputs may be found on the front, side or back of the standard television. If your television inputs are occupied, you will need to hook your PlayStation 3 up through the inputs of another medium, such as a DVD player or cable box receiver. The inputs will be red, yellow and white. The red and white inputs are audio inputs, while the yellow input is a video input.

Match the color-coded cables with their respective inputs on the television. Once you have matched the cables to the proper inputs, plug the cables into the television. If your inputs are labeled, make sure the television display is on the same input that the cables are plugged into. Once this is set up properly, turn on your PlayStation 3. If your console has been previously hooked up to a high-definition television, the PlayStation 3 will try to output video to an HD display. As a result, you will not be able to see any picture, but you will hear the audio from the PlayStation 3.

Turn off the front power to the PlayStation 3, but do not turn off the master power switch in the back of the console. Because you cannot see any picture on the television, you will not be able to access the settings menu and display options through the PlayStation 3 interface. Instead you will need to perform a manual display settings reset. When the power has been turned off, you should still see a red light on the PlayStation 3 showing that the master power is still turned on. This has effectively put the PlayStation 3 into standby mode. Press and hold down the "Power" button, located on the front of the console, for five seconds. When the display settings have been reset, you will hear a set of beeps.

Turn on your PlayStation 3. It has been reset to its default settings, making it once again visible on your television screen. When you return your PlayStation 3 to an HDTV, you will need to adjust your display settings again for HD and use an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) cable, but your display will not go blank. Instead, you will be able to see the interface menu at standard definition until you readjust the settings.
